Marquito Velez - Martin Bérenger Trio
Martin Bérenger (guitar and violin), Dajo De Cauter (double bass) and Marquito Velez (flamenco guitar).
Martin Bérenger has always been passionate about music and at the age of fourteen the started practicing in different theater companies and bands. Charlie Christian, Joe Pass, Herb Ellis were his tutors, but it was Django Reinhardt who “forced” him into gipsy swing. He got his guitar playing lyrical and swinging by sharing the stage with Danny Doriz, Tony Bauwens, Birelli Lagrene and Bruno Castelluci a.o.

Marquito Velez (°1966) discovered the flamenco guitar very young. At the age of fifteen he moved to Malaga to improve his technique under the guidance of Pedro Escalona. In 1987, he ended 4th at the "XVI Concurso de guitarra de Jerez de la Frontera" in Spain, where the world’s best flamenco players meet. He opened in 1988 for Paco De Lucia at Cirque Royal in Brussels. In the meantime he worked as a flamenco master with Christine Desprez, Sepehr Arjomandi, Serge Dacosse, Jose Toral, Jose Ligero, Stephane Bracaval, Ghalia Benali, ...

Dajo De Cauter (°Gent 1977) studied at the Jazzstudio of Antwerp. He shared the stage with Fapy Lafertin, Tcha Limberger, David Paquette, classical string ensembles, Moker, Hendrik Braekman, Birelli Lagrene, … Besides the Bérenger Trio he’s member of Waso quartet, Moker, Patrick Soussois, De Cauter quintet, Egyptian Fantasy, Tamara's out of the blue, Maskes Maschien, Romani and other jazz bands.

The Bérenger Trio was originally formed to perpetrate the soul of the Hot Club de France, but was never intended to be a copy of the original. On the contrary, the band got known for its personal versions of the heritage of the gipsy swing repertoire. These three masters will serve you a cocktail of Mediterranean music, gipsy swing, jazz, flamenco and bossa nova.
